Asians Underrepresented Among Biomed Prizewinners

Asians continue to be “severely” underrepresented among U.S. biomedical research prize awardees, making up fewer than 7 percent of recipients of certain prizes and 0 percent of recipients of some specific honors, according to a new study in Cell. Asian women fare worst of all, the study notes. Co-author Yuh Nung Jan, professor of physiology and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at the University of California, San Francisco, told Stat that the findings were “news to me and I suspect a lot of people aren’t aware of this.” He added, “Frankly, the numbers are pretty appalling.” Asian Americans are about 7 percent of the U.S. population but make up 20 percent of biomedical researchers in the U.S., according to Stat.
